OUTLINE

• Paragraph Topic Sentence: A sentence that expresses how a SPECIFIC literary technique or stylistic tool is utilized in the work being discussed
• Cluster #1-

⇒ Interpretation of Evidence
• Cluster #2-
⇒ Key Idea
⇒ Evidence from the Text
⇒ Interpretation of Evidence
• Cluster #3-
⇒ Key Idea

• Clincher Sentence- A sentence that connects the overarching message of the piece, or the effect of the literary technique to the universal nature of literature.


Notes:
• This is a LOOOOONNNNGGG paragraph. It flies in the face of the journalistic style of writing that we teach in literacy classes.
• While this format is not often used in Regents style writing, it could be modified to meet the requirements of the exam.
• To begin teaching, start with JUST a PTS. Then, move to including Cluster #1. When students are comfortable with one, move to 2 clusters. And on.
• Ultimately, students should be able to complete a strong expository paragraph in under 20 minutes.
