THE STRANGER LESSONS 1-3

MONDAY

Focus Question: How does Diction help to convey meaning?
Lesson Focus: What tone is immediately established in the opening of The Stranger?

Materials Needed:
• Copies of The Stranger
• Homework Assignments
• Sample Expository Paragraphs
Bridge (Connecting the lesson to prior learning):
Take out your Sample Expository Paragraphs from yesterday.
1.) Draw a Box around the PTS & the Clincher
2.) Circle any Transitional Phrases between ideas
3.) Underline the 3 key ideas
Create a list of potential transitions to use in our Expository paragraphs

Mini-Lesson:
• Distribute Books and Homework Assignments
• Review Expository Paragraph Outline
• Read aloud The Stranger
• Discuss our initial reactions to Meursault
• Review CLOSE READING ANALYSIS procedures
Reading: The Stranger pgs. 1-7

Independent, Pair, & Small Group Work:

20 Minutes (TIMED!)
Read pgs. 1-3 and the first paragraph of 4 closely
Write a paragraph in which you discuss how Camus’s diction establishes a specific tone.

Materials Needed:
• Philosophy Chart
• Definitions of the different philosophies.
Bridge (Connecting the lesson to prior learning):
If you had to summarize your Life Philosophy in one sentence, what would it be?


Mini-Lesson:
What is Philosophy?
Elicit from the students.

THURSDAY

Lesson Focus: How do we assess our Expository paragraphs?

Materials Needed:
• Expository Paragraph Rubric
• Sample Expository Paragraph
• Student produced samples

Bridge (Connecting the lesson to prior learning):
1.) Take out your Literary Expository paragraph
2.) Re-read the Paragraph- DO NOT MAKE CORRECTIONS
3.) Assign the Paragraph a grade on a scale of 1 -9
Mini-Lesson:
• Review Peer Revision Policies
• Remind students of appropriate verb usage, tone vocabulary, and transition poster


Reading: 5-6 students will share exemplary paragraphs
Independent, Pair, & Small Group Work:

In pairs, switch paragraphs and assign a grade, this time using the appropriate rubric.
